Oahe Presbyterian Church  ~  Pierre, South Dakota

"A friendly and caring church growing with God and community"

January / February 2010

As I reflect on all that this new year will mean to my life and each of our lives collectively in our faith and growth in God’s call through our Master Jesus Christ I was reminded of an insightful, and perhaps somewhat remote sentence from Scripture found in the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes 4:12: “By yourself you're unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped.”

If I am the only strand to that rope, there would be no hope. Together we form the two strands bound by a third, and the most important strand, our God. In all that we seek to do, may we do so discerning that God is the Lord of our lives; both individually and collectively. As Matthew Henry commented, “there is a threefold cord that can never be broken. They that dwell in love, dwell in God, and God in them.”

I believe that it is very true that we can apply this to our lives - when we focus on the life of God’s Church. May we boldly, and with conviction, at Oahe Presbyterian, declare God’s enduring truth and manifest our faith in tangible, visible means.

Our rope is a great blessing - may we really use it this year to its fullest potential! God be Praised, amen.

 Pierre Pantry Needs

January was Oahe’s month to collect food for the Pierre Pantry. Items can still be put in the designated carts in the check-out areas of Sutleys or Dakotamart. Items in the carts are picked up twice a week and taken to the Pantry. Items purchased elsewhere can be brought to the church and left in the cart in the narthex. (Due to corporate policy, Walmart chooses to give a monetary donation to the Pantry instead of providing carts for collection.)

Have you wondered how the Pantry works? People go to PARS and fill out a one page application. Those who qualify get vouchers for a certain amount of money. ( The program is income-based.) The vouchers are taken to the Pantry, open 4-5:30, Monday thru Friday. Each food item in the Pantry is labeled with a price, so a person can “shop” for the items they wish, until the vouchers are used up. One shopping trip per month is allowed ( or 30 days between visits.) Prices are low, so $10 in vouchers can “buy” as much as $50 in retail price of groceries.

A volunteer buys a limited amount of perishable items (eggs, milk, etc.) which are available in limited supply.

Day old bread is donated from the local stores, as is meat that is approaching expiration. A local hunter’s group, part of Sportsmen Against Hunger, provides 1 lb. packages of ground venison. These specially donated items are extra, and do not count toward the voucher total. A commodity program has just been started, so items on this special shelf are also extra. Also on the free shelf are other extra or close to expiration date items.

There is also an emergency program, coordinated with the Red Cross, Missouri Shores, etc. This gives a coupon book of 6 coupons, which can be used once a week for 6 weeks.

Cathy Mercer, from PARS, stressed that people understand that Pierre Pantry is still in need of food. Last month they served 149 families. The proposed Food Bank will store and ship food to agencies or groups that need it in the region, but Pierre Pantry will still be accepting and buying food for those in need.

PIERRE PANTRY ITEMS NEEDED
  • Cooking oil Sugar (4 lb. bag)
  • Flour (5 lb.)
  • Saltines
  • Canned meats (tuna, chicken, Spam, etc.)
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • HOT cereal
  • Powdered milk
  • Fruit juices
  • “Helpers” (hamburger, chicken, or tuna)

They have enough
cold cereal,
canned fruits, and vegetables right now.

Rev. Rhoad and his family were very touched by the thoughtful and very generous gift that was given by the congregation this past Christmas Season. They used the funds to pay for and install a much needed dishwasher in their home that had broken down in August.

Thank you from all the Rhoad family.

Relay for Life Team Planning Time of Remembrance

The OPC Relay for Life Team is planning a time of remembrance during worship on May 30, 2010, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The simple ceremony will honor friends and family, near and far, who have passed away in the past several years, no matter the cause (not just cancer).

Many people in our congregation have lost people who were special in their lives, and the Relay Team wants to honor and remember them.

If you would like the Relay Team to include your friend or loved one in the remembrance, please bring to worship any Sunday on or before May 2, 2010 a picture or two of the special person.  If one of the pictures has you and your friend or loved one in it, all the better.

The pictures  will be assembled into a video presentation for May 30th.  You will receive your original pictures back after they have been scanned.

Please see Candy, Ruth, or Kay Cee if you have any questions.  Thanks.
