Oahe Presbyterian Church  ~  Pierre, South Dakota

"A friendly and caring church growing with God and community"

June 2010

On June 13 this year we will have our annual worship at the Historic Protestant Christian Chapel located on the Oahe Dam. The weather at that time of the year has been quite agreeable the past couple of years, at least for me; cool morning breeze with the humidity not rising until after 9 am.

We will worship at 8am on the 13th of this month of June, and I pray that our worship will be inspiring, and a blessing, as you commence that day. I hope that you can come, and perhaps reflect in a special way how magnificent our God is and what a rich legacy of faithful saints who have followed God’s way we have before us.

Personally, I am humbled by the basic, yet still meaningful function of the Historic Chapel. It reminds me of the Church I served in my first Call - a remote Presbyterian church on the crossroads of two gravel trails in the Peace River country of northern Alberta. While serving there the winter, understandably, always presented the greatest challenges - and I think we can all be grateful that we do not now regularly worship in quite such humble abode; but I hope that it can give us a moment to reflect, and realize, how far God has brought us in our lives, both individually and corporately.

            We are blessed.

            We are loved.

And we are called to continue the work of our Master’s Kingdom, perhaps not so differently than those early pioneers who first built, and worshipped, in the Historic Chapel on the Oahe Dam. It reminds me, as Psalm 13 concludes; “I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. [6] I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”

Join us this summer, as you are able, for activities and worship to the glory of our one, true and eternal God.

Sincerely, in our Master, Jesus Christ’s service,

Rev. Johnny Rhoad

Oahe Presbyterian is a small church with a big heart

Although Sunday attendance averages around 40 our newsletter reflects the actions of a much larger congregation.  At one time we had a session of nine; currently it is five but it is still accomplishing many of the same tasks as before.

Our PW group, once averaging 13-15 a meeting now averages 8-9 but is as active in mission as it ever has been.  The recent Presbytery meeting is a good example of a church gathering together to plan and implement entertaining a 100 plus attendees.  Headed by our clerk of session, Boots Johnson, our small congregation joined together to host a day of worship, business and fellowship … and did so joyfully.

Recently a group gathered to help prepare the church for summer worship: cleaning, yard work, and adding new metal fascia to the church roof.  Ladies from the church traveled to Camp Rimrock to clean cabins prior to the spring work camp.  Time was spent decorating the sanctuary for our Pentecost Sunday worship.  The choir has practiced faithfully and from the heart of the choir has sprung a praise band.  Music will be playing a large part in the upcoming summer worship services.  The organ died but was replaced with a beautiful parlor grand piano.  In a week both men and women from the church will travel to Camp Rimrock to put up metal roofing on the newly constructed shower house and also an older bathhouse that will soon be converted to the camp canteen.

Yes, we may be small as a congregation but we are large in heart -- reaching out to help...reaching out to others…reaching out to our Lord.

John 15:13
13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

This doesn't mean to die for them but to lay your desires aside to help meet the needs of your friends.

Cabin Cleaning

On Monday, May 17th, Mary Jenner, Marijean Petersen and Meleta DeJong traveled to Camp Rimrock and spent the day cleaning cabins in preparation for the camping season.  So much time was spent cleaning and repairing there was no time left for shopping.

Work Done At The Church In May

By Cindy Droppers, Chair, Buildings and Grounds

Following is a list of work that has been done at the church so far in the month of May. As of this writing there is a week left and so by the end of the month the list will most likely be even longer.

May 1st was a workday put on by the Buildings and Grounds Committee. The following jobs were done…..

  • Windows were washed on the inside and outside
  • The microwaves were thoroughly cleaned including the filters
  • Some of the fascia board was put on the outside of the building
  • The podium was raised slightly so that it doesn’t sit on the cords running under through it
  • The choir closet was cleaned well
  • The flower bed was worked on
  • The rocks behind the shed were moved
  • The parking barriers were straightened
  • Sticks and twigs were picked up off of the lawn

Since the workday volunteers have done the following…

  • The lawn has been mowed
  • The sprinkler system has been turned on and programmed
  • The rest of the fascia board has been put on
  • Weeds have been sprayed
  • Weed & Feed has been put on the lawn
  • The flower bed has been tended to
  • The inside plants have been taken care of

A big thank you goes to all of you who do your part to make sure that the work gets done. The list is always long and it takes all of us working together to get it done.

Howard "Howie" Thomas Nelson is Baptized on May 10th
Howie Nelson, son of Chris and Kate Nelson and grandson of Boots Johnson, was baptized on Mother’s Day.   Making the day even more special for the Nelsons was the fact that mom, Kate, gave the “Mothers Day Meditation” during the worship service.

* Get together with friends and plan our strategy.

* Be part of the OPC team.  Teams can have up to 15 members.

* Come up with a (creative) team name.

* Register our team on-line and create a page for OPC.

* Do a fundraiser or help with a fundraiser.

* Purchase luminaries.

* Make a monetary contribution.

* Decorate luminaries @ OPC on 7/7 from 6-9 or 7/12 from 5-8:30

Summary of Task Force Recommendations

The Task Force was charged with:

(1)  developing a mission statement for the Presbytery Camping Ministry;

(2)  developing a vision for the future mission design for the Camping Ministry

(3)  proposing the best use of the current property (both Pioneer Camp and Camp Rimrock) and any proposals for the use of the gift.

The Task Force explicitly examined the need and focus for any Camping ministry, the reasons for a Presbyterian Camping Ministry, the feasibility of engaging in a non-geographical form of camping ministry (not restricted to a camp or location), and the stewardship and mission implications in continuing camping ministry in a number of various forms including maintaining our current facilities or selling one or both of them.  Following this year of research, prayer, and examination of alternatives, the Task Force offers the following recommendations:

1.    Because of the strong ministry camping and retreating has had historically and the continued impact shown by both research and personal experience camping has, in spreading the gospel and bringing people to Christ in our church and Presbytery,      it is recommended that the Presbytery of South Dakota continue to engage in the ministry of camping.  Further, the task force recommends that our camping program has as a priority reaching Presbyterians in our Presbytery and Synod, and that any curriculum should have a Reformed “flavor” to it consistent with Scripture and the Book of Order (G-2.0300 to G-2.0500)

2.    As a clear reflection of goal and mission, the Task Force further recommends that the Presbytery of South Dakota adopt the following mission statement:

The Presbytery of South Dakota Camping and Retreat Mission is to provide opportunities to encounter God and to grow in the Christian faith; and to provide for life-changing experiences to people of all ages.

3.    After contacting 17 other church camps in South Dakota about using or partnering with their facilities // contact with other Presbyterian camps in the Synod of Lakes and Prairies // contact with one other Presbytery (Cascades) which utilizes a nongeographic model of camping // and examining national and statewide trends in the use, marketing, and future focus of camping ministry overall, the Task Force determined that the unique opportunities provided in the Black Hills and the stewardship and opportunity of having our own camp facility outweighed the relocation of camps to other areas of the state or the using of other Christian camps for our ministry.      The Task Force therefore recommends that the Presbytery of South Dakota Camping Ministry maintain a presence in the Black Hills and as much as possible a consistent schedule and place for summer camps.

·         After hearing the marks of a successful camping program from the national denominational PCCCA director; // exploring successful Christian Camping Ministry models in South Dakota with Lutherans Outdoors and other camping ministries; // and reviewing our own program feedback from campers, parents, and others, the Task Force makes two recommendations that concern consistency, effectiveness of program, and continuity between successive years at camp.

4.  The First is a recommendation that the Camping Committee continue using a summer-long model of counseling staff and consider either a program director or utilizing the camp director for that capacity.

The Second is a recommendation that the Camping Committee and Presbytery consider hiring a year-round director.  A suggested time line is to start the search in the fall of 2010.  A probable salary package would range from $40,000 to $65,000 full time.

5.    After a review of the efficiency and stewardship of models of both camping and oversight and a review with Synod and National staff concerning fiscal, property, and programming stewardship as well as effective fund raising programs,   the Task Force recommends that the Camping Committee request Presbytery discontinue the current “committee” oversight of camping and establish a separate Board of Directors to manage the camping ministry of Presbytery.

6.    After reviewing current market potential and value of both properties, // facility life and maintenance at Rimrock, // cost and feasibility of building and development at Pioneer, // programming needs for future ministry, // financial resources, // and six different options for development of both properties including the range from selling both camps to doing nothing to either camp, the Task Force recommends there be a phased development of Pioneer focusing on camping and group on-site usage (20-50 people in a mini-lodge scenario).  This would proceed over several years depending on usage.  Wilderness options would be maintained.   Rimrock facilities would be appropriately maintained and used for traditional camping experiences.  Energy would be expended on expanding programming opportunities at both sites and cooperative efforts within the Synod.  Intentional evaluation of the Presbytery camping ministry at both sites would need to be done regularly by both a director and the governing board/committee.

Members of the Camp Vision Task Force included: : Moderator Tim Harmon, John Armstrong, Gerald Collogan, Paul Penn, Larry DeJong, Jennifer Swier, Don Nolte and Rolly Kemink.
